First thing I do is middle-click the "New Posts" button so that I will always have a tab with the search I did when I first arrived.
Then I middle-click (mousewheel-click) threads I want to read or respond to based on their titles in the first page of new posts. By this point I have half a dozen or so tabs - I go through each one responding or reading as it were, and when I'm done I'm down to the New Posts tab I opened earlier. If there's more than one page of new posts, I'll advance the page and go about it. If there isnt', I might re-run New Posts and check for any responses or close it and go about my business.
I also refuse to buy a mouse without the forward/back buttons under my thumb, because I got hooked on it around Y2K and now I can't bring myself to actually CLICK a back or forward button in my browser. It feels so laborious compared to clicking with my thumb. If I'm at someone's computer that doesn't have said mouse (THE HORRORS) I still use backspace for Back and just don't use Forward..
