You have obviously never played Smash Bros. Melee competitively. It's A LOT more than just direction + attack button or direction + special move button. Mastering the technical skills (teching, L-canceling, wavedashing, pivoting, chain grabs, each of the characters' individual tech skills, and many more that I cannot remember off the top of my head) takes a LONG time. Back when I played competitively, I still hadn't mastered all of them completely and that was over a year of playing it. Yeah, the basic controls are simple, but after that, you'll need months of practice to be any kind of decent at that game. (Smash 64 was the same way, but your statement holds true for Brawl.)
Here is a quick example of shit that takes months, if not years, to master.
