Guns aside, Planster has a better idea of what is better, I offer the perfect backup sidearm for zombie killing.
The War Hammer.
Hammer-shaped on one side for blunt trauma damage to zombie heads and a nice pick-like point on the other side for maximum zombie killing.

A morning star is good, but this baby is lighter and easier to wield. It has multiple multi-function striking points for maximum impact. Also useful for prying open doors, precision strikes to locks (morning star has a larger area making it harder to direct force to a smaller area), never needs sharpening, and helps with opening that stubborn can of Spam without destroying the contents.
BG can take a heavy, momentum driven (you have to build up speed for the morning star to become truly effective, except wide swings which wouldn't be good for close melee and fast moving targets), un-weldly morning star. I'm taking a light, (> 5lb) fully forged, steel pickaxe with me to open up some zombie heads.

I have a plan for the Z-War that involves taking over a wal-mart, fortifying the area, and holding out there for a month or so to find out if the government is going to come in a help us or not. I'd go into it, but I can only tell the people that are coming with me about it.
