Just a thought... is it possible you've set firefox to automatic private browsing at some point? If you do, it starts up in private browsing, but doesn't tell you that it is. In that mode, it won't save passwords or auto-fills. You can check by looking under tools... if "Stop Private Browsing" is greyed out, you're in private browsing mode.
