These blends invariable contain one or more synthetic cannabinoids. JWH-018 is one of the most popular, as it acts on CB1 and CB2 receptors in a manner very similar to Δ9-THC but is not an analog of any controlled substance and therefore legal in most countries. JWH-073 and JWH-081 have similar effects and are also legal, but do not so closely resemble the effects of Δ9-THC. In large doses, JWH-018 is reported to cause intense paranoia, especially in users without a tolerance. It produces a "heady" high with a much lower body load than the mixes of cannabinoids typically found in cannabis.
CP-47497 is the main ingredient in the widely popular Spice, and has a strong affinity for the CB1 receptor with much less affinity for CB2. It is also legal in most countries. It produces a heady high with a heavier body load than JWH-018.
HU-210 is a heavy hitter. It is several hundred times more potent than Δ9-THC and produces a heavy body load and mental effects similar to potent cannabis strains. It is illegal in the US and EU, as well as any other countries with analog act laws. Spice Gold, was seized in large quantities by US customs and similarly treated in the EU after a GC/MS analysis of Spice Gold by German researchers found HU-210 to be the primary psychoactive ingredient.
Initial research has found these substances to be relatively safe when consumed in small doses. They exhibit no toxicity at recreational doses and are not known to be carcinogenic. My opinion is that JWH-018 is likely the safest of the synthetic cannabinoids and that all should be studied intensively due to strong therapeutic effects observed animal testing, but I advise users to take extreme caution when consuming any research chemical due to unknown risks of long-term, high quantity, and repeated exposure. Additionally, the propensity of these compounds to produce aromatic hydrocarbons when burned leads me to believe that vaporizing is the only way to consume it with any degree of safety, and that they pose a strong risk of lung cancer if smoked.
Under no circumstances should research chemicals be consumed by anyone taking any medication, especially anti-depressants and drugs that alter brain chemistry.
