I used to have a Newton - a former employer had bought them for the departmental staff. It was revolutionary, although too its biggest weaknesses were the inability to sync to common apps, poor handwriting recognition, and size.
At that time we had a "closed door" meeting with Compaq and they were proposing the release of a handheld computer to compete with the Newton. We didn't see any prototypes but they essentially said "we're working on a confidential project and would you buy and use a handheld computer if we released it?" I don't recall our answer but I think it was a realistic "no." This was in the early 90s.
I read a new blurb somewhere that said Apple had no plans to enter the PDA market. We'll see.
