At the end of the day, he knows enough to tell if he isnt going to be able to come back and compete - and if he wasnt, and I can only guess he now he believes he isnt - he doesnt want to come back on those terms. Its disappointing but fair play to him. One of the hardest calls to make is to look deep inside yourself and realise (for whatever reason- rustiness, age, fitness, neck injury) that you're not up to it.
I'd rather this than watch him go round a second off the pace for a few races and THEN dop out.
