A good strategy when starting out is to measure your regular daily caloric intake and then shave off 500 calories. This essentially is a recipe to lose at least a pound per week (a pound of fat is worth 3,500 calories), and it's a highly achievable goal to cut that amount. Throwing in enough exercise will burn as much as that as well, so that could lead to the burning of two solid pounds *of fat* per week.
