Back when I was exploring such questions, the lady and I developed a special time of day for media time. The idea is that the toddler wasn't really given a lot of time in front of the boob tube or on the computer because we didn't want her raised by the nice people at Disney or PBS or Playschool. Anyway, when it was time for the adults to act like adults, it was also coincidentally media time. We'd choose a particularly wholesome dvd or online video and leave her to watch for about an hour or so.

We started doing this at about 9 months. It ended at about 2 because she'd get bored, so we had to replace it with video games, which still didn't quite meet the need. The last option we came up with was to be friends with other couples that could babysit for an hour or two every few days, and then we'd do the same for them. It was a sacred pact.
