Everything stays the same, plus you can use Cydia. It voids your warranty, but you can always boot to DFU mode and restore, and they can't tell. The number of Apple store employees with jailbroken iPods and iPhones should give you an idea of how much they really care. It's just another incentive for you to buy their product.
Just don't be a piece of shit and pirate or trade apps. Developers put hard work into them and deserve a few bucks from you.
edit: reading up on the full release of redsn0w, and it warms my heart to see that overflowing unchecked values is still the way to hack things. Reminds me of the old days.
