I have a similar situation, though not the same fetish, which I will leave a mystery.
Here's my perspective on it, with the fetish my boyfriend and I share, that was initially his.
I think when in a truly committed relationship, where complete trust and understanding is the goal, and things like that are shared, that openness from the male about his fetish intrigues the female, or, partner. Men don't open up so easily, I find, and when they do, their communication is practically peaked, which women love. So they take an interest on the fetish as well, because its an aid in communication, and usually, whatever turns him on, turns you on too.
From there, your own fetish forms, even if you don't realize it. You crave the attention you get from him when you two are focusing on that fetish, its another incredible way to bring you two together.
