I started out with an 18-55mm and a 55-200mm, but then decided to go with just the 18-200mm VR.

The 18-55mm lenses are relatively cheap ($150-180, especially the non-VR lenses ($110+).

Adorama, Cameta, and B&H Photo all have used equipment that might be worth searching... can also try searching shopzilla.com or ebay.
