Further, the FIA requires a "plank" made of plastic be bolted to the under side of the tub. It serves two purposes. One is to keep the monocoque from grinding off on the track surface when the car bottoms out on bumps.
The other is to make sure no one is cheating on the 6 cm minimum ride height. The "plank" is made of a known thickness. After the race, the FIA measures it, to see how much has been ground off. If it's anything over about a millimeter, it is assumed the team was running the car too close to the ground and the car is disqualified. Michael Schumacher was once stripped of a race win because of this.

I do believe that the material isn't necesarily wood, there are rules around the density and material to be used.
