Rescue teams had started combing the area near Mammoth Lakes on Wednesday after the discovery of aviation identity cards bearing Fossett's name, a faded fleece sweatshirt and $1299 cash.
Anderson said the crash site was roughly 400m from where the identity cards and cash were found by a hiker.

I'm thinking this person should get the "Johnny Honesty" for the year. I'm not so sure that if I found $1300 in cash in the woods that it would have been turned in with the rest of the stuff. I guess I'm a horrble human being. But I look at it this way, if he's dead, he's not gonna need it. If he's alive, I
seriously doubt the cash would hold any evidence to his whereabouts. I would bet that they are expecting some kind of reward, but now since it's looking like Fossett may have expired in the crash, chances are all they will get is a handshake and a "thanks for your service citizen!"
Would you have returned the cash?
