Brave? Interesting. Influencial. Perhaps a tad self indulgent at times. All words I would use to describe him. I don't think I would use the word brave to describe Godard. I've met him. He was nice enough when he wasn't staring at my friends breasts (they were pretty spectacular though).
The reason you can't get a 49 disc set in the US is simple. The films' distribution rights are not controlled by one company and the costs involved in securing those rights and getting the prints/masters ready for distribution prohibitive.
