The Japanese get a 49-disc Jean-Luc Godard Collection?!

A 49-Disc Godard Collection

What. The. Fuck.

I was tempted to buy the English cover one that's also on Ebay, but the subtitles looked to be the same (i.e., mostly Chinese and Japanese only) and so it looked like a bit of a scam. Plus, I couldn't find anything on a fucking 49-DISC SET via Google.

Pisses me off, it does.

Brave? Interesting. Influencial. Perhaps a tad self indulgent at times. All words I would use to describe him. I don't think I would use the word brave to describe Godard. I've met him. He was nice enough when he wasn't staring at my friends breasts (they were pretty spectacular though).

The reason you can't get a 49 disc set in the US is simple. The films' distribution rights are not controlled by one company and the costs involved in securing those rights and getting the prints/masters ready for distribution prohibitive.

I think we need pictures to back this up.

Just how good WERE the breasts?

Goddard is one of those directors that I know about, but honetly haven't watched much of.

Honest question: is he as good as his reputation deserves?

godard has been consistently independent and has put out enough work that you can see something of how he operates, which is in itself i think kinda brave--though it maybe looks more that way from the present context in which it is hard to imagine anyone being able to make that much work and put it out at all.

there was the phase of systematic rule violation, which generated the madison sequence in "band of outsiders" and then alphaville, which is one of my favorites ever--amongst a heap of other work. i have a particular affection for the documentary-like side of him, the way he slides everyday life into cinematic fantasy into "everyday life" in the context of a cinema-fantasy. like alot of folk, i'm ambivalent about the maoist phase (late 60=s early 70s), but sometimes i think it's because he stopped working in black and white.

i confess that i've not seen a whole lot of his more recent stuff, since "to each his own"---things here and there---some parts of the history of cinema.

and i'm not sure that making interesting work and being a human being that enjoys looking at the breasts of charlatan's friend are mutually exclusive, though i can certainly understand the disappointment that follows from it.

49 discs though---that's a lot of audio-visual wallpaper. you need big rooms and lots o time for that.

I wasn't disappointed in his admiration of her cleavage. I was amused by it, as was the owner of the breasts in question. I only shared the anecdote in an effort to humanize the man in light of the pedestal that appeared to be being constructed.

that was a projection on my part then, comrade.
i've met quite a few people whose work i admired who left me wondering "what the fuck?" afterwards in a more negative way...

i think that godard has been able to continue producing stuff is pretty remarkable. he has to have a network of mycène behind him. there's a level of freedom that only such cash can buy. this knowing that most of his productions are not terribly expensive...

There is a small collection of European and Asian (read: Japanese) distribution companies that consistently put up money for what most Americans would call "artsy" films. Films that will never see a theatre in the US (except for Film Festivals).

They also continue fund people like Jim Jarmusch...
