The first one had a grittiness to it that somehow made it seem authentic, despite the terrible performances. The second was a big mess.

I kinda thought the third had the most substance of the three, though. The story was a bit contrived, and the Nissan 6 in the Mustang was nothing short of blasphemy, but the somewhat observant peek into Japanese culture (excusing the poor representation of Yakuza) and the relationship between the white guy and Han was interesting. I'd almost go so far to say that the conversations between Han and the white guy were the highlight of the series. Sung Kang is a decent actor and was able to grow the role well, which is good news because...

Sung Kang will be reprising his role as Han in the fourth installment. By my understanding, this new movie will take place after 1 & 2, but before 3 (which explains Vin Dlesel's cardboard cameo at the end of Tokyo Drift). The good news? Justin Lin (Tokyo Drift) will be directing instead of Rob Cohen or John Singleton, so I would say that FF4 has the same opportunity to improve the series that Tokyo Drift took advantage of. Music will be done by Brian Tyler (best known for his original score to the Sci Fi channel's "Children of Dune", which was quite good).

I'm going to see it, but I won't go in with high expectations.
