i have a garmin handheld mapping gps as well... you will want to install garmin mapsource with the related drivers, you should have CD's that have come with the packaging, or download the most recent version from garmin's site... inside mapsource, you can manage waypoints and create routes and handle your maps if you have any, then there are two icons with arrows on the top tool bar, one to send and one to receive data.
it's a little odd at first, but once you figure it out, it's really friendly and easy to use... mapsource even has a export to google earth button, it is really fun to view your routes in google earth.
