USB Ports not working?
I went on vacation for a week. I shutdown my computer, but did not unplug it from the power strip. When I got back, I turned it on and got the message that windows did not shutdown properly last time. I know it did when I shut it down. I just figured the girl that was dog sitting got on it and didn't shut it down right. No problem.
Then I realize, the keyboard does not work, when Vista gets done loading I have no mouse. It turns out that for some reason the USB 2.0 ports on the motherboard aren't working. I switch to an add-on port and restart, still no-go. I dig up an old ps/2 keyboard and it does work. I tab around, run anti-virus, nothing. Device manager tell me nothing. I keep messing around and during one of the restarts I get a blue screen that says windows shutdown to prevent damage to my computer and says it is due to bugcode_usb_controller (believe the last word is right). I get to the point where I just re-install windows. Wake up this morning after letting Vista install and that same blue screen is on. I reset the computer and Vista finishes loading. The USB ports still do not work.
The weirdest thing of all (to me) is that the USB's don't work for only controlling devices such as a mouse and keyboard. Printer works, flash drive works. I go buy a ps/2 mouse and begin rebuilding Vista to my personal preferences.
Now I intermittently get a little error message in the bottom right corner that says " a USB device has malfunction and is not working properly, click here to view". I click, the window shows no specific device that has malfunctioned. It even gave me this message when nothing was plugged into the ports.
Other than this, the system runs great like always. I am pissed I re-loaded Vista and lost all my bookmarks and what-not.
I am no tech guy by any stretch. My troubleshooting skills basically blow when it comes to comps. I have no idea how to fix this. I love my wireless keyboard/mouse combo and would like to use it again.
Any help would be greatly appreciated and please let me know if I need to elaborate further on anything.
