I hadn't specified the sound sources in places other than audacity. in sound and audio devices. I thought I had that set right but obviously not.
anyway, seems to be working fine. been converting .wav's to mp3's all evening. it is handy to clip the ends off analog recordings. I'm sure I'll get more out of it as time goes on.
