sound recorder ?
hey all...man I'm no geek here.
so my old comp here has a SBL card which came with some software of course..drivers and whatnot. part of that stuff was a simple recorder. a small thing no bigger than winamp control panel on my screen. it had record/play/stop/pause buttons and you could click a small button to name and save the wav file. it was bare bones but worked fine with no time spent reading any manual, wiki pages...etc. I just had a go w/ Audacity and well...it ain't that simple. I mean, it'll probably do what I want and about 1000 things I never even thought anyone would want to do. for the moment it's more complex than I want to deal with. all I want to do is record some files that play on the web...mysapce, utube, whatever. I don't need a career learning about how to use it. as far as I can see this new comp (dell XPS) has no app like this. I can convert the .wav to .mp3 later or if there's a recorder that just saves to mp3 that's fine too. I've looked in the freeware thread and will continue searching here and the web. I'm wondering if a ten year old SBL card will work in my new XPS...the XPS has onboard sound so I'm also wondering if I ought to buy a new sound card, which may come with another simple app for recording.

I don't know if this is it, I have never known sound recorder to record the sound going to the speaker.
Start > accessories > Entertainment > sound recorder. But this is the only program I know of that has been in Windows that is as spartan as you describe. But you really ought to just stick to audacity. Just ignore the functions you don't know, look for the drop down that says either Stereo Mix, Microphone, or Line in, set it to Stereo Mix and hit the record button.

no I remember that recorder was on my old comp too. it's limited to 60 seconds (wtf ?!?)
I got the first result from google...a freeware but it didn't record anything...it generated a test file but the file in winamp was silent. same w/ the sound recorder you just pointed out. found my old SB install cd...can't see anything exploring it. I don't know anything about the settings on the one in the old comp. I just found it in programs and tried it. pushed record and then named and saved the file. I don't know what it was "directed" to listen to. hmmm. I'll try audacity again. I'd already uninstalled it. ok I re installed it. I see the dropdown for mic or sterio mix and it's grey and un selectable. I don't see any settings or options to tell it what to listen too while recording. So I also got Mymp3 here and nither this or audacity seem to allow me to choose "sterio mix" as a setup option. ahh...seems to be working now. further tests needed

I hadn't specified the sound sources in places other than audacity. in sound and audio devices. I thought I had that set right but obviously not.
anyway, seems to be working fine. been converting .wav's to mp3's all evening. it is handy to clip the ends off analog recordings. I'm sure I'll get more out of it as time goes on. ![]()
