I don't know if this is it, I have never known sound recorder to record the sound going to the speaker.
Start > accessories > Entertainment > sound recorder.
But this is the only program I know of that has been in Windows that is as spartan as you describe.
But you really ought to just stick to audacity. Just ignore the functions you don't know, look for the drop down that says either Stereo Mix, Microphone, or Line in, set it to Stereo Mix and hit the record button.
