They didn't come up with their own engine. They used a free engine called Wintermute.

Also, the game is 2D... the screenshots are misleading because they look 3D, but they are actually still images with 3D rendered characters. That's right, they just went through a bunch of games and hit "PrtScr" a lot, and made a game out of it. Can't forget the ultra nice looking snow they added though.
