I think it's funny how closely this ties into happiness. I've always seen things in Buddhist texts about being happy and in one a Zen master acknowledged that easterners are usually unhappy with their lives where as westerners tend to be.
Am I happy? Yes. Do I equate that to success? I sure do.
You can gripe over the things you're too lazy to change all day but if you have more money or you have a different job would you be more happy? Usually the answer is no for people in this part of the world.
And by happy, I don't mean happy that you have a big house and a good job but happy that you have what you have and content with what you don't have. I think a lot of this stems from my practice (I'm Buddhist) and I'm always surprised how many people I meet that are not happy and do not think of themselves as successful. I think it's hard to think of yourself as successful if you're not truly happy with your life. And if you're not happy, how successful can you be?
