damnit. will people never learn?
there is no way in hell a four foot fence can keep a pitbull in. that's just stupid.
i feel terrible for the woman and the dogs both - the dogs were obviously not raised correctly.
There are a few rules of thumbs to owning large dogs.
1) look at theirr geenes. go back three generations. if the lines are none-violent studies suggest the pup will have little to do with violence not given by natural instinct - in other words, they are no automaticly fight dogs.
2) People should have to get a license for such creatures to prove you can handle them.
3) if you're dumb enough o have a four foot fence to keep the dogs in, you really don't need a dog. they are smarter than you.
4) You should be required to spend no less than half an hour per day to work with the dogs and reinforce play and obediance.
The dogs are unwilling victems. they do what they are bred to do. They are slaves to the master's whims and most of the time the master is not prepared to care and raise these dogs correctly.
pits, mastiffs, rots, german shepherds and what not are not the kind of dog to 'own and take care of when I feel like it". They can be highly dangerous and over protective.
as for making a dog illegal. that's sad. we have several completely irresponsible dipshits who do not do their jobs as owners, so it should be illegal for everyone? thats incomphrehensable. its like taking the guns from Lebell because some idiot shot himself. there is no intelligent logic there, just a temporary 'cure'.
btw, ifyou live in Ne w York and are 17 or younger and own a pitbul you are breaking the law.
we need to start teaching kids to be responsible somehow so this kind of thing will be much less likely to happen. we can't make accidents not happen, but we can lower the risks....
what is sad is most people don't care about the dogs. they were not raised right and were in an enviroment not suited for them. they did their nature andn ow face death.
i say we chargge the owners heavily, not a slap on the wrist and start treating criminals as criminals.
as much as it breaks my heart (which is does) I do believe these pits should be put down unless there is someone e who takes in violent dogs for rehab and signs a waiver.
i'm ending the post now. sorry if sloppy, i am overly tired.
