My mother's god-niece (well, best friend's daughter) was the same age as me. She grew up with the worst of her father before her parents' divorce. She would lie and steal things all the time, which got her into a lot of trouble with her later step-father. When she was in trouble, her parents would bail her out only to again and again kick her out. I am quite sure this lead to her death/vehicular suicide. She had problems that weren't addressed.
Family has to show their support but I don't think that is enough.
