Interesting solution. Turns out his new upgrades to his proxy were screwing everyone using some programs. He went back and redid the upgrade right this time and now it works... without having to put the proxy settings into either Pidgin or Thunderbird. Essentially, problem fixed.
Now if only Gizmo would keep the proxy settings.
