Actually, that's not true here. For Palestinians, the key is a symbol of the right of return; when Israel took over most of the territory in 1948 and hundreds of thousands of Palestinians fled / were expelled, they closed their homes for the last time and took the key with them. So the key is a symbol of someday being able to leave the camps and return to their homes, and by extension to the homeland. It's quite a potent and emotionally charged symbol, though it's quite sad that there will not be any return for them and their descendants.
