I'd consider shunning a form of torture. Esp. when they order family members to either close off complete contact or be thrown out of the church.
Hey the good news is you can be saved, your soul will live in salvation with our lord. Bad news is you can no longer have any contact with your brother, he's been asked to leave the church.
