Gettin in Shape

So, it's summer time again, and I believe I shall take on the epic quest of losing this god damned weight. I've always been the "big kid" in school and what not and no matter how hard I've tried, I haven't been able to shake the title of such. The thing is, I way a whole lot more than most people would think because I don't appear as fat as most people my weight would. I dunno if it was because i was "built to be big" so I carry my weight well or what, but I do know I could definantly stand to lose weight. Lots of it. Because undressed, I am one scary mofo. Anyway, not only do I wanna lose weight but I wanna start lifting weights. I'm already a pretty strong guy. I mean at 300+ pounds I can do over 15 pushups, and nearly 70 situps and could easily run a mile straight. I know for a lot of you buff types that isn't alot but for someone weighing as much as me, I don't see that as being too bad. Anyway, I guess my real question is, Should I worry about dropping the fat first and then chiseling out the "Stealth muscle" or do both at the same time?
