Gettin in Shape
*Flex,strut, falls on his face*
So, it's summer time again, and I believe I shall take on the epic quest of losing this god damned weight. I've always been the "big kid" in school and what not and no matter how hard I've tried, I haven't been able to shake the title of such. The thing is, I way a whole lot more than most people would think because I don't appear as fat as most people my weight would. I dunno if it was because i was "built to be big" so I carry my weight well or what, but I do know I could definantly stand to lose weight. Lots of it. Because undressed, I am one scary mofo. Anyway, not only do I wanna lose weight but I wanna start lifting weights. I'm already a pretty strong guy. I mean at 300+ pounds I can do over 15 pushups, and nearly 70 situps and could easily run a mile straight. I know for a lot of you buff types that isn't alot but for someone weighing as much as me, I don't see that as being too bad. Anyway, I guess my real question is, Should I worry about dropping the fat first and then chiseling out the "Stealth muscle" or do both at the same time? xXxEmptyxXx |

that is fucking damn impressive! good stuff man anyway - on the fat:muscle thing - the best thing you could possibly do is do a bit of aerobic exercise to warm up every time you go to the gym - then hit the weights hard for a while (btw - if you want muscle bulk then you need heavy weights, low reps, but for strenght, low weight, many reps). As you pump weight you will be burning fat aswell - but the problem with bulking up whilst you still have a bit of the good old flesh on you is that you can't see where muscle definition is coming about and if you are doing stuff rite. Don't get it...lemme give you an example - you do you weighted crunches - but your breathing aint quite rite - so you end up with a hard as nails set of abs - but they protrude out like a set of ...well something. So this hasn't helped you at all - truth be told - if you are past your growing age (about 24) then don't eat for a couple of weeks and burn down to ethiopian style leanness - then go on a high protein diet and bulk up - if you have time. Or else, just watch you do the rite excercises and start work now - you should see impressive results in about 4 months if you keep at it 3 times a week or so. Good luck. Tell us all how it goes

Well, you kinda sound like me. I'm 6'1 and am down to about 320 lbs. About a year ago I was weighing in at about 370 or slightly more. Even then I was somewhat active. I played tennis in college at 310 (granted it was D3) after I gave up football and you should have seen some of the looks I got after kicking some little 150 lbs dudes ass. But, that;s another story.
Like me you are probably pretty thick under all of the fat and and you probably could not get below about 240 or so without stopping eating altogether. By having a naturally large frame and being muscular I think you can go about losing the weight with a mixture of cardio and weight training. You will get results faster with a mix of the two anyway. One thing you want to be careful of is overtraining to the point where the body reacts adversely to what you are trying to accomplish. Still, the hardest thing for me to do is to make sure I do not weight train to often. I gotten into such a habit that it seems weird to go to the gym and hit the treadmill for 30 minutes and then be outta there in less than an hour. I always feel that I should be spending more time in the weight room since I made it there that day. But, again, with a mix between the two and with only a mild change in diet you can get results in a month even. |

Nutrition nutrition nutrition! (since no one's really mentioned it yet!)
Changing your nutrition and adding in aerobic activity will shed those 'fat' pounds. It's all about burning more calories than you take in over the course of the day, week, month. Try to stay away from complex carbs like bread, bagels, pasta, as it's harder for your body to break these down than simple carbs like vegetables. As for aerobic activity, try to fit 30 minutes of walking/jogging into your schedule 4-5 times a week and slowly increase the duration/intensity as you get more comfortable with it. You have a tough journey ahead of you, but by doing some simple things, you'll really be able to turn it around. Good luck!!!

Eat sensibly, run every other day for at least 20 minutes (distance is not as important). Go here and find your training heart rate. Exercise at this level everyday (alternate run days with upper and lower body days to allow your muscles to recover) for at least 20 minutes. Worry about muscle tone later on, drop the weight first.
