Hmmm... good question.
If you go to someone you know, you get the benefit of their knowledge of you and the other person, but you also get any biases they have.
If you come to a message board, you get a more unbiased POV, but you also get a lot of people who can't manage their own lives, let alone anyone elses, chiming in with crap advice mixed in with the odd nugget of useful information.
How about a professional, be they psychologist, pastor, teacher, counselor, etc?
