Honestly, I would say the ONLY reason to get a PS3 is if they have exclusive games you simply cannot live without. There are some great exclusive PS3 titles. However if, as you mention, your primary desire is for an HD player, You may really want to go 360 + HD-DVD or get a Toshiba dual-format. Take my previous arguments to heart or with a grain of salt, there are a lot of VERY strong reasons to believe that HD-DVD will win out over Blu-Ray, doubly now so with the first HD-DVDs hitting the market that allow for web browsing from inside the movie for additional content and online purchases. If the studios actually do well with this, it'll be all over for Blu-Ray in a matter of months. Even without the extended multimedia capabilities, the backers alone should convince most people of who the winner will be.
From a console perspective, in my group of friends back home, not a single one owns a PS3. We all have fairly varied tastes in games (exception being that we all love Halo) and still nobody can make an argument for a PS3 over a 360 from an RPG, sports, FPS or strategy gaming perspective. In theatre there are a couple of guys with PS3s, but they all also have 360s. In the end the 360s get used more, as we network them for Halo 3, sports games, Crackdown, CoD4, et cetera. As far as I can tell, multiplayer just isn't as fun on the PS3 (maybe I'm just blatantly ignorant about it, but I never see much talk about it). Also, Xbox Live Arcade? 'nuff said! :-p
