If you've been going to the gym for ages, you may experience what is sometimes called muscle memory.
I don't know how much you know about the exercises you are doing, or if you are just doing them. But you will experience less and less gain by doing the same exercises over and over.
To combat it, its best to work chest, for a month-ish. With small bits of legs/arms/back thrown in. Next month switch it again, but always keep it sort of balanced. You can't work chest then leave it go for 4 months til you get back to it again or you'll gain nothing.
