When I saw the 8800GT and realized that had I waited a few months I could've gotten better performance than my 8600GT without having to shell out the cash for a GTX, I died a little inside.
In other words, yeah. Get one.
As to a sound card, the days of Creative dominating that market are over, I think. I'm using a Diamond Xtreme 5.1, which works quite well with my 5.1 speakers, offers decent sound quality (not audiophile level, but certainly good enough for a casual user) and hardware support of EAX, EAX 2.0 and A3d all for less than $30. You ought to be able to find something similar that will suit your needs just fine. Don't bother shelling out a bunch of cash for some high-end card if you're not going to use it.
