Opinions on new rig
Hey everyone.
Been awhile since I posted in this forum. Was hoping on some feedback on this system that I am very close to pulling the trigger on. This will be the first setup I have put together completely by myself. Would love any feedback you might have or any opinions regarding any components. Mostly used for intensive applications (encoding videos, photoshop stuff, etc) Computer Case - Thermaltake Soprano DX VE7000BWS Black 0.8mm SECC Chassis/ Aluminum Front Bezel ATX Mid Tower Model #: VE7000BWS $115.99 Motherboard - GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3R LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel $129.99 Power Supply - OCZ GameXStream OCZ700GXSSLI ATX12V 700W Model #: OCZ700GXSSLI $129.99 Processor - Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Model #: BX80562Q6600 $279.99 Memory - G.SKILL 4GB(2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Model #: F2-6400CL5D-4GBPQ $149.99 Hard Drive - Western Digital Raptor WD1500ADFD 150GB 10,000 RPM Serial ATA150 OEM Model #: WD1500ADFD $179.99 x 2 $359.98 Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound - OEM Model #: ARCTIC SILVER 5 $5.99 CPU Cooler - ZALMAN CNPS 9700 NT 110mm 2 Ball Ultra Quiet Model #: CNPS 9700 NT $59.99 TOTAL: 1231.91 Still missing a sound card and video card (Monitor is an acer 22" widescreen) Was thinking about the 8800GT that Lasereth has been praising. I have a soundblaster x-fi on my old system and found that I very rarely need anything so good so I'm not quite sure which way to go on that. The floor is yours, I would appreciate any feedback you might have for me. |

The 8800GT really is an incredible bargain. Would be silly not to go for it.
Personally i'd switch to a seagate hard drive, thought western is reliable. And have more space. 500GB or so- you always end up needing more than you think, especially as time passes. The rest looks good to me, i'm a fan of Gigabyte and OCZ.

Keep the WD Raptor hard drive. I have one and it's freaking crazy. Big difference between a 10k RPM and 7200 RPM HDD.
The rest looks great. Don't know anything about OCZ power supplies so I can't recommend either way. I'm using G. SKILL ram and it's very stable. I would definitely go for the 8800 GT. |

When I saw the 8800GT and realized that had I waited a few months I could've gotten better performance than my 8600GT without having to shell out the cash for a GTX, I died a little inside.
In other words, yeah. Get one. As to a sound card, the days of Creative dominating that market are over, I think. I'm using a Diamond Xtreme 5.1, which works quite well with my 5.1 speakers, offers decent sound quality (not audiophile level, but certainly good enough for a casual user) and hardware support of EAX, EAX 2.0 and A3d all for less than $30. You ought to be able to find something similar that will suit your needs just fine. Don't bother shelling out a bunch of cash for some high-end card if you're not going to use it.

OCZ power supplies are nice, but I'd rather recommend an Antec or a Sparkle for long-term stability and consistent power.
Raptor for your boot/app/games drive and maybe a larger Seagate for your storage(1TB drives are reasonable these days). Sound? I've given up on secondary sound cards. Unless you are doing 5.1 or 7.1 sound, the onboard audio is usually pretty decent these days, even the crappy RealTek stuff. *shrug*
