I'm not sure if you've gotten past this or not. Both Norton and McAfee have consumer-minded uninstall utilities due to their weak/non-functional uninstaller.

As for a replacement, you have to consider that anything you see on store shelves is usually not worth the hassle. The best AV is going to be something you spend time researching. I use AVG, but I'm not the type of user to go looking for trouble either.
