uninstall Mcaffee - Help!
I searched on mcaffee, and didn't see anything on this topic: I want to load up Norton anti virus on my home pc, as it comes free with my cable internet.
I already have Mcaffee installed (2006 - now expired in anticipation of installing Norton) but cannot un-install. Everytime I run the uninstall and then try to install Norton, Norton will not complete because it says that Mcaffee is still there. Any hints? |

What you need is Revo Uninstaller.
http://www.download.com/Revo-Uninsta...=uo&tag=button Download that and install it. Run Revo and it will detect traces of Mcaffee on your computer. Highlight the Mcaffee icon and hit uninstall. If it's already halfway uninstalled, it will get rid of it anyway. After it's removed, make SURE to hit "scan after uninstall" when it prompts you to. Then it will scan the registry and majorly wipe out anything related to Mcaffee on your PC. One of the best programs I've ever used. By the way, I highly recommend AVG Antivirus instead of Norton. Norton is bloatware and not much better than Mcaffee. Plus it's free and you don't have to worry about it running out after a year like Norton. Here's AVG Antivirus: http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Vir...ml?tag=lst-0-1 Hope this helps!! |

Another recommend is Avira. They also have a free version, and it's one of the best rated AV apps for finding unknown virii (beating other freebies and absolutely smoking the big names) and has the same load of known-virus definitions as any other product. I HIGHLY recommend it. It also has a very small memory footprint and doesn't over-utilize resources at all.
Oh, the site is www.avira.com

Hmm, Avira supports 64bit Vista. This is good, as it is almost impossible to find a good AV for it. I used to have AVG installed (free of course), but unfortunately if you're doing Silverlight dev, it recognizes a series of the vital silverlight js files as "evil" and you can't bypass the execution block unless you pay for a full version....which I could do, but why pay when you can get for free??
Thanks xepherys. ~Drego

I'm not sure if you've gotten past this or not. Both Norton and McAfee have consumer-minded uninstall utilities due to their weak/non-functional uninstaller.
Quick google search found this: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/U...val-Tool.shtml As for a replacement, you have to consider that anything you see on store shelves is usually not worth the hassle. The best AV is going to be something you spend time researching. I use AVG, but I'm not the type of user to go looking for trouble either.

I actually tried the revo uninstaller as per Lasereth:
Ran Revo and removed all entries for Mcafee Shredder. Rogers (my provider which is the source of the free Norton's) software is now finding "mcafee internet security suite 2005". Revo does not find this entry so now were back to the begining again. Also re-ran Mcafee removal programs MCPR.exe, MCPR2.exe no change. So now I am thinking that Imight try one or both of the other options provided: the unistaller freeware, or seeing if the AVG will overlay remnant mcaffee. *********** Update: the AVG will not load on top of the so-called un-installed macaffee. Also tried to run the uninstaller found at Softpedia. Macaffee is still there. Does this mean that I need to actually purchase Macafee again???? Last edited by Leto; 10-16-2007 at 12:29 PM.. |
