Madeleine L’Engle, who in writing more than 60 books, including childhood fables, religious meditations and science fiction, weaved emotional tapestries transcending genre and generation, died Thursday in Connecticut. She was 88.

Her death, of natural causes, was announced today by her publisher, Farrar, Straus and Giroux.

Ms. L’Engle (pronounced LENG-el) was best known for her children’s classic, “A Wrinkle in Time,” which won the John Newbery Award as the best children’s book of 1963. By 2004, it had sold more than 6 million copies, was in its 67th printing and was still selling 15,000 copies a year.
I remember the first time I saw the book cover of the book A Wrinkle In Time. I borrowed it from a friend and that lead me to start reading science fiction books. Up until that time I was mostly interested in reading fables, parables, and mythology.

I learned to love science fiction from that first introduction, and I have loved it ever since. What I really enjoyed about her books was the science that was involved. It was a primer to the cell structure as Meg ran about the mitochondria.

Looking up the books now as a fresh reread, I find that there are two other books that make up what I thought was just a trilogy but it is now a quintet of time related books:

Quote:
This is the last book of the Time Quartet, preceded by, in order, A Wrinkle in Time (1962), A Wind in the Door (1973) and Many Waters (1986). Many Waters was written and published later than A Swiftly Tilting Planet, but takes place earlier with respect to the characters. These four books plus An Acceptable Time (1989) are occasionally referred to as the Time Quintet. [2] However, An Acceptable Time takes place a generation after A Swiftly Tilting Planet, and is more properly part of the Polly O'Keefe series of books. The larger "Murry-O'Keefe" series (the Time Quartet plus the books with Poly/Polly O'Keefe in them) contains three novels between A Swiftly Tilting Planet and An Acceptable Time in terms of character chronology. These are The Arm of the Starfish, Dragons in the Waters and A House Like a Lotus.
Did you read any of her books especially, A Wrinkle In Time, A Wind in the Door, A Swiftly Tilting Planet?
