We dropped our cable in June for Dish and DSL, for both cost and the rotten attitudes of the people at Cablevision.
There's no discernable difference in speed on my pc, but my son swears it's slower on his(then again, he'll be gaming, reading forums and chatting while having music playing-all at the same time). I mostly just do IM Bingo(have a few IM's going at once).
Basic cable vs basic satellite was no comparison in cost. As a new customer to Dish, we also got a 3 month trial of all HBO, all Showtime and TMC; we've decided to keep them for the time being.
DSL is $10 cheaper per month, basic satellite also $10 cheaper and twice as many channels, which, to me, means twice as long to channel surf befor deciding there's nothing worth watching.
