I think this album has too much of a "campy" feel to the lyrics and the music is less "industrial" than it has been in the past. It has kind of a stripped down sound to it.
I've also been a big fan of MM for years, I saw them live for the first time back in 1994, and was really expecting something quite a bit different. I really liked The Golden Age... and was hoping for some more along those lines.
