I went thru that once, coincidentally on a Continental flight from Houston, too.
It was a little after 9/11, and I got to the airport 59 minutes before take-off. International rules at the time said to be there at least 60 minutes prior to take-off. A gate agent decided he needed to go on a power trip that day, and informed me that I would not be allowed on the flight.
Right before take-off, of course, he "relented," putting me in the last available seat - right in front of the bathroom.
Luckily, it was only a 45 minute flight, and after complaining to Continental, I got a free R/T ticket.
