Install the patch. That's all I can say.
The game is GORGEOUS on the 8800. You'll find yourself just flying around near the stations and the jumpgates just to look at the detail. They also got the sense of scale right. No other spaceflight game I've ever played has made me feel like I was flying near anything truly huge, but approach a jumpgate slowly and get right up next to the ring (and fly between the ring layers) and you'll be astonished.
