Personally, I found a good, trusty pair of headphones, and a good, trusty desk mic are the best. I went through years of headsets where the mic would die and the phones would still work or vice versa, rendering the whole thing useless, pretty much. Now if one component fails, I can replace it on the cheap. Plus I can buy the comfiest headset I like without worrying, and at some point, I could even invest in a nice mic which would have use elsewhere.
ATM my setup includes a pair of Supramax headphones (30+ years old according to my dad, has 3.5mm jack!), and one of those generic desk mics clipped up between my monitors. System works very well
