In an interview with Today's Christian,founder of Curves Gary Heavin was quoted as saying that he donates money to "pro-life pregnancy-care centers".
No thanks.
Curves isn't a real gym, as some have already pointed out here. And yes, some real gyms are scary, but some are gems, and it will take some shopping around to find one. Mine is just around the corner from my house, small but good variety of equipment, and it's open any time. Ask yourself those kinds of questions--when are you going to go, are they open at that hour, what kind of staffing do they have, would you like to be able to watch TV/do other things while exercising, do you need a personal trainer, do they have other equipment to use beyond the typical, etc. From what I've seen of their setup, I don't think Curves is what you're looking for.
