Curves
Im interested in hearing from any of the ladies here that have joined Curves, if there are any. Im really thinking of looking into joining, I dont know much about it at this point, other than I think its the thing for me as opposed to Weight Watchers.
Has anyone here done it? and if so how was the experience and was it worth the money to you? Im more interested in losing inches and a "some" weight, not a drastic amount. I'd just like to lose the flabby upper arms and what Im doing at home by myself isnt working

I do 24 Hour Fitness because it is closer and there are more of them in this area. It can be confusing for a newbie to know what to do when you get there, other than the treadmill. I purchased a few trainer sessions when I joined so I wouldn't be 'lost' and to get me into a routine. And so they could recommend which machines would work the best for me.
My aunt does Curves. Curves is women only. It is set up like a circuit. You start at the beginning, do x amount of repititions or x amount of time. Then move on to the next spot. You don't have to wander around, wondering what to do next, if you missed any muscles, if you should be doing cardio or weights this time, wait for this machine and that machine to become available. Hope this helps.

All I know is that my aunt and my cousin go to curves and they both like it. Sorry, I can't lend more help to that subject.
However, I've found what works best for me is to have a trainer because they will push you to do what you should be doing and not just what you want to do. So, maybe for you a gym membership and a trainer are a good option? It gets pricey though, which is why I don't do that anymore. If you do try curves, definately let us know how it is. I'd love to hear.

Curves is good for people who would like to start an exercise routine and have never really developed one in the past, at least that's what people who are members have told me. I noticed that people who joined stick with it and like the atmosphere. Its a good place to start, but why not try a limited membership in the beginning just to get a feel for it?

One of my coworkers loves Curves. She's in her late 50s and had never really done gym-type exercise before. She said it's easy to stay in a routine and there aren't many excuses to try to do less or skip something.
My favorite was the YMCA. No one gave a crap what anyone else was doing or looked like because there were few "gymmies". I ended up so motivated that I went five times per week and dropped 50 lbs in 4 months. I met with one of their personal trainers, told him what I wanted to accomplish and where my limitations lay. They also have free nutrition classes, etc. We go to a World Gym now. I get embarrassed because the chicks are skinny and I've grown a butt. Plus some of the gyms are so buff they can't walk straight. Which is weird. I don't like waiting in line for machines, either. But I have zero attention span so the variety of machines works well.

I would suggest doing Curves and Weight Watchers together. You can learn a lot about nutrition and eating from WW, and get a bit of exercize at Curves. Curves, by the way, is basically a "baby-step" gym. OK to start with, but it's not going to seriously change your body.

I have friends that go to Curves and enjoy it, but Sultana is right, it's not a body changing format unless you can devote at least 3 hours a week of sweat and use their onsite nutritionist. When I heard about how they manage your food, I cringed; it's way too specific. At least with Weight Watchers, you can have variety and not be beholden to X amount of grams of carbos per day, X amount of fats, etc...
Any good workout program will take about 6-10 weeks of noticeable difference if you go 3-4 hours a week, but Curves is not strenuous, it's more of an opportunity to be a bit more fit, get the blood moving and get out of the house. Had you done WW? I lost 45 lbs on that one...kept it off going on 8 years this fall.

In an interview with Today's Christian, founder of Curves Gary Heavin was quoted as saying that he donates money to "pro-life pregnancy-care centers".
No thanks. Curves isn't a real gym, as some have already pointed out here. And yes, some real gyms are scary, but some are gems, and it will take some shopping around to find one. Mine is just around the corner from my house, small but good variety of equipment, and it's open any time. Ask yourself those kinds of questions--when are you going to go, are they open at that hour, what kind of staffing do they have, would you like to be able to watch TV/do other things while exercising, do you need a personal trainer, do they have other equipment to use beyond the typical, etc. From what I've seen of their setup, I don't think Curves is what you're looking for.
