The first one looks eerie because, before my friend showed me the door was open, I shot it thru the window. I place my lens right up against the glass and use the lowest aperature setting I can-I think this was at 3.5; the glass, being rather dirty, gives that appearance, rather than the dirt showing up on its own. Another example is below, shot thru the window pane of a mill:
