The library in 1.0 is just a nicer view to the folders on your lightroom directory at your HD. It's not an abstract database anymore as it was in the earlier versions.

The problem was that, when I have an original and want to try a second edit, unless I rename it first, opening the original in Lightroom gives me the previously edited version, even though LR 'changes' its name by adding '-edit' and changing the file to a TIF. So, if I edit PICT0001, close it, it's now PICT0001-edit.TIF, which is fine. But when I go to the original again, I get that edited one, even though the folder shows its unaltered state. Haven't figured out why.....so I'd just been resaving the original first with a new name (like, PICT0001A), then going into LR with that. In that way I still have the original(PICT0001), a working copy(A) and then the finished edit.
Edit: A photography forum cleared this up for me. LR doesn't have 'file save as' like other Adobe software-'export' is what is used, allowing a change from TIF to Jpg, if desired.
