It's not
that he fired them. It's that he/his administration
ranked them all according to republican loyalty and then cut off the bottom of the list. Primarially, the ones who prosecuted the lions share of republican's during the term.
It's also that he used a provision in the Patriot Act to bypass congress in giving the replacement judges recess appointments.
