Pai, there are conflicts such as this all over the world. A few of them in our own hemisphere.
It is a terrible thing that such things happen but I have to say that your views on this matter are a little simplistic. Sadly, we cannot defend everyone. Acts such as those by the Burmese government truly are terrorist in nature but endanger Americans very little. While the ties between the war in Iraq and the war on terror may be strenuous actions in places such as Afghanistan have hindered the terrorists ability for offensive actions.
It would be a better world if we had the resources to end all such atrocities, or even if a strenghthened UN could deal with them. Unfortunately, we haven't arrived at that point yet and as calous as it seems we have to look after ourselves first. As in the removal of the Taliban.
